Shangarh Meadow - Great Himalayan National Park (India)

 Notes from the journal:

6/17

  • Hiked to our accommodation in Shangarh, which was very pleasant until the last part where we were walking on a dusty road with lots of cars due to tourists visiting for the holiday weekend
  • We really wished we had been able to stay at the Aastha Homestay for longer, but we had already paid for our accommodation in Shangarh
  • Checked in at our hotel, used some very bad wifi to do some work/rebook a flight, did a ton of laundry
  • Our room had a beautiful view of some very steep and green mountains, with some big snowcapped peaks in the distance
  • We went downstairs to the cafe/restaurant and tried to order food but people to make the food could not be located and the guy who was going to try to make the food (that we were paying for) was reading instructions about how to turn on the stove and said he had no idea how to make the dishes we ordered so we cancelled our order
  • We went back down later in the evening during dinner time when more staff were there and there was a lot of confusion on whether or not they had aloo gobi but eventually a dish of aloo gobi arrived at our table
  • It was a very rainy evening and we relaxed in bed :)

6/18

  • We lazed around for awhile and enjoyed the beautiful views
  • We found out our apartment application (that we had applied for during our layover in Ho Chi Minh) was accepted! Yay for having a place to live when you return to the states :)
  • Went down for breakfast and then walked to the Shangarh Meadow, which is a massive green space. We found a shady spot along the edge to read but had to keep moving because a bunch of cows kept bothering us on and off all afternoon
  • Walked a little ways along a side road to the Mud Hostel Cafe and sat outside on the patio with a beautiful view of the mountains while we ate.
  • Went back to our hotel to laze around a bit and eat dinner (this was our scheduled break for our fast-paced travels so we were very lazy)

6/19

  • Lazed around some more, ate breakfast
  • Went back to the Mud Hostel for a late lunch and it started to pour so we sat under the overhang and watched the rain against the beautiful Mountain View
  • We used a break in the rain to walk back to the hotel and laze around some more until dinner, where I found a big bug cooked into my food (and got free roti as a result lol)

6/20

  • Went outside to wait for our pre-arranged taxi back to Aut, but the driver’s car wouldn’t start so we hung out for a bit looking at the mountains and then got a ride back to Aut
  • Ate lunch at a rooftop cafe along the river in Aut and waited on the side of the road for our bus. The ride back to Chandigarh was much less painful and I had some roadside samosas at one of the stops
  • Went back to the same hotel in Chandigarh, ordered some food, and crashed

Read if I referred you to this post:

I wouldn’t really recommend the Shangarh Meadow area specifically, as we wished we had spent our entire time in Great Himalayan National Park at the Aastha Homestay (much more relaxing and secluded)
